Ten policemen and two civilians have been killed during a gun battle between security operatives and suspected bandits in Sakaba Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The clash occurred around the Rafin Makuku axis after security personnel reportedly intercepted the armed group moving between Zamfara and Kebbi states.
The Kebbi State Police Command said 17 suspected bandits were neutralised, while four motorcycles belonging to the attackers were also burnt during the encounter.
Two other police officers were injured and are currently receiving medical attention, according to the command.
The Nigeria Police Force confirmed the deaths, with the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, mourning the fallen officers and describing their sacrifice as a painful loss to the Force and the nation.
The remains of the deceased officers have been taken to Birnin Kebbi, while additional security personnel have been deployed to the area to pursue fleeing members of the criminal group.
