No fewer than 168 solar-powered streetlights installed along the Longbridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway have been stolen by suspected vandals.
The streetlights, installed in 2025 along the approximately five-kilometre bridge, were intended to improve visibility and enhance the safety of motorists, particularly at night.
However, several sections of the bridge have reportedly been stripped of their lighting infrastructure, with the vandalism believed to have occurred gradually over time.
Motorists and business owners have expressed concern that the disappearance of the lights is returning the busy route to darkness and potentially exposing road users to increased risks of criminal attacks and accidents.
The Federal Controller of Works in Ogun State, Richard Adeleye, confirmed the theft, stating that some suspected vandals had been arrested and charged to court.
The Ogun State Police Command also confirmed the arrest of suspected vandals allegedly caught targeting critical infrastructure along the axis.
Authorities have urged residents to report suspicious activities while calling for increased surveillance and stronger measures to protect public infrastructure.
