The United Nations Security Council has overwhelmingly voted in favour of a US-proposed ceasefire plan for Israel and Gaza, marking a significant step towards peace in the Middle East. 14 of the 15 members of the Security Council supported the resolution, which lays out requirements for a “full and complete ceasefire,” while Russia abstained.
US President Joe Biden released a detailed plan on May 31 that seeks to handle the ongoing conflict through a methodical approach. It entails the exchange of Palestinian detainees for the release of hostages held by Hamas and the return of the remains of the deceased hostages. The resolution also calls on Hamas to endorse the ceasefire plan and declares Israel’s endorsement of it.
