Cholera Outbreak: 37 People Have Died as Lagos Reports 401 Cases

Cholera is an infectious disease that usually spreads through contaminated food and water that contain the Vibrio cholerae bacteria. It causes severe dehydration and diarrhea.

The current cholera outbreak, which has impacted 30 states, including Lagos and Ogun, has resulted in no fewer than 37 deaths.

In a statement released on Thursday by the State Ministry of Health’s Director of Public Affairs, Tunbosun Ogunbanwo, the Special Advisor on Health to the Lagos State Governor, Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, stated that the state has now documented six cholera fatalities, compared to the previous 15 cases.

According to a recent study by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, from January 1 to June 11, 2024, 96 local government units across 30 states reported over 1,141 suspected and over 65 confirmed cases of cholera, which resulted in over 30 fatalities.
