Ministry of Finance is Seeking to Stop the Imminent ASUU Strike

On Wednesday, the Federal Ministry of Education announced that efforts were underway by the Federal Government to prevent the Academic Staff Union of Universities from going on strike again.

After the National Executive Council meeting last weekend at the University of Ibadan, ASUU threatened to go on strike if the Federal Government did not accede to its demands within the next 21 days.

ASUU President Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke further stated during a press conference on Wednesday at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike, Abia State, that lecturers would be compelled to go on strike again if the Federal Government did not accede to their demands before the ultimatum’s expiration of 21 days.

On June 26, ASUU received an invitation to a meeting from Minister of Education Prof. Tahir Mamman to discuss outstanding issues impacting universities and to discuss ways to prevent the impending strike.

Speaking on the meeting’s outcome, the president of ASUU claimed that the agreements made with the federal government had not been carried out.
