FG Meets With Labour Leaders Over Petrol Price Hike

On Wednesday, the Federal Government met with the organised labour leadership at George Akume’s office, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, in Abuja.

Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, led the Federal Government’s side, while Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and Nuhu Toro, Secretary General of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), led the Organised Labour team.

Atiku Bagudu, Minister of Budget and National Planning; Wale Edun, Minister of Finance; and Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, Minister of State for Labour, were among the attendees.

The agenda for the meeting was not disclosed, but organised labour has been dissatisfied with the country’s high cost of living, galloping inflation, the recent increase in the price of petrol at the pump, and the power rate.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) retail locations in Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, changed the price of petrol at the pump last week.

A litre of the necessary item is being sold at NNPCL stores in Lagos for ₦998, which is around ₦150 more than the original price of ₦855.

In Abuja, the situation has not been anyway different as NNPCL retail outlets hiked the price of the essential commodity from ₦897 to ₦1,030.
