The disaster happened at 11:22 a.m. near Port Harcourt’s waterways when East Wind Aviation’s Sikorsky SK76 helicopter, registered 5NBQG, took off from Port Harcourt Military Base (DNPM) to the FPSO-NUIMS Antan oil platform.
According to Odutayo Oluseyi, a spokesman for the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, there were eight verified passengers on board.
Authorities said in a statement that rescue attempts had been launched after the plane ditched into the Atlantic Ocean seas close to Bonny Finima.
According to the ministry, search, and rescue efforts have begun with assistance from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and other pertinent organisations, and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) and nearby aerodromes have been informed.
