The House of Representatives has directed its Committee on Power to investigate the frequent national grid collapses and provide a report within three weeks.
Hon. Mansur Manu Soro (Bauchi, PDP) brought forward a resolution of urgent national concern at the plenary session, which led to this decision.
In his motion, Hon. Soro voiced his profound concern over the ongoing power outages that have caused a nationwide blackout and exacerbated the financial difficulties that Nigerians are already facing.
He emphasised that any country’s ability to drive economic growth and development depends on having a reliable power supply.
Soro described the situation as frightening, pointing out that the national grid has collapsed eight times in 2024 alone.
He emphasised that the current power sector crisis has left states in the North West and North East in the dark, and he called on the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to bring electricity back to the impacted areas.
Hon. Soro also drew attention to the alarming reality that these grid failures are taking place despite the Minister of Power’s assurances to the public about an enhanced supply of electricity, which resulted in the government approving higher electricity rates for Band A users.
