Improved Community engagement will end social norms and other gender based violence.

Programme Coordinator, United Nations Population Fund , Lagos Office, Abbigail Msemburi emphasized this at a Walk to commemorate the year 2024 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence Campaign in collaboration with the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Lagos State.

Msemburi added that there is no other time to galvanize action to end violence
against women and girls around the world.

Also Speaking at the Walk, The Commissioner for Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), Bolaji Cecilia Dada
noted that One in every three women worldwide experience gender-based violence . She added that for far too long, impunity, silence, and stigma have allowed violence against women to escalate to pandemic proportions.

To end violence against women and girls requires a comprehensive approach that includes laws along with decisive implementation to protect women and girls from violence; prevention that starts at an early age and the provision of services accessible to all survivors.

She wants Key players especially professional Bodies and Community Leaders to create more awareness of GBV, challenges, discriminatory attitudes and call for improved law and services to end violence against women.

The Campaign coordinated by the Centre for Women’s Global Leadership is one of the strategies to call for the elimination of all forms of Gender-Based Violence.

The core 16 Days Campaign takes place every year from 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to 10 December .

Members of Nigeria Association of Women Journalists and other stakeholders were part of the Walk.

The theme of the UNiTE campaign is “Towards Beijing +30: UNiTE to End Violence Against Women and Girls.”
