Morocco, alongside Spain and Portugal, will co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup. This will mark the second time the men’s World Cup is held in Africa, following South Africa’s hosting in 2010.
However, the tournament will kick off with the first three matches in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay. This means teams will compete across different hemispheres and seasons within the same tournament. FIFA’s decision to hold the opening games in South America is a tribute to the centenary of the World Cup, as the inaugural tournament took place in Uruguay in 1930.
The 2030 World Cup will feature 48 teams, including nine African nations, and will consist of 104 matches in total. It is speculated that Morocco may host the final, with the construction of the new Hassan II Stadium near Casablanca, set to have a capacity of 115,000 spectators.
Morocco’s national team made history at the 2022 World Cup, becoming the first African nation to reach the semi-finals.
