MTN Nigeria has increased the prices of its internet plans to reflect the 50% tariff hike approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in January. The revised pricing now includes a 1.8GB monthly plan priced at ₦1,500, replacing the previous 1.5GB plan that cost ₦1,000, according to an updated price list reviewed by TechCabal.
The 20GB plan has risen from ₦5,500 to ₦7,500, and the 15GB plan now costs ₦6,500, up from ₦4,500. Larger bundles have seen more significant increases, with the 90-day 1.5TB plan going from ₦150,000 to ₦240,000, and the 600GB 90-day plan climbing from ₦75,000 to ₦120,000.
An MTN Nigeria executive, who spoke anonymously, clarified that the price increase isn’t a flat 50% across all plans, but rather an overall adjustment. Some plans, such as the 2.5GB daily plan priced at ₦600, remain unchanged to ensure accessibility for the general public.
SWIFT Networks has also raised its internet prices by 50%.
Airtel and Globacom have not yet updated their prices, although an Airtel source confirmed that the company has introduced a 25 kobo flat rate for all voice calls. Both Airtel and Globacom, along with other operators, are expected to implement the tariff increase later this month.
According to sources within the telecom industry, the new pricing adjustments took effect on Monday afternoon, impacting both data and voice plans. Some daily plans have seen slight changes in validity; for instance, a 2-day plan is now valid for only 1 day, and a 7-day plan is reduced to 6 days.
The NCC approved the 50% tariff increase on January 20, 2025, after lengthy discussions with telecom operators, who argued that existing tariffs were no longer sustainable due to inflation and the devaluation of the Naira. The telecom industry had maintained the same tariffs for 11 years, despite rising inflation.
