The United States authorities have flagged 201 Nigerians for deportation as part of President Donald Trump’s ongoing crackdown on illegal immigration.
Among those set for deportation are convicted prisoners and individuals who have committed various offenses.
The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu, revealed this during a meeting with US Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, at the Tafawa Balewa House in Abuja.
“At present, we’ve been informed that around 201 Nigerian nationals are in US immigration detention, with about 85 cleared for deportation,” she said.
She further expressed concern for those affected, noting, “This is not only a worry for the Nigerians in the US, but also for their families in Nigeria who rely on them for support, including children whose school fees are funded by these diasporans.”
She appealed for consideration, asking whether deportees would be allowed sufficient time to manage their affairs or if they would be hastily repatriated, warning of the potential trauma, especially for those who have not committed violent crimes.
