Olorundare Moshood Jimoh Appointed New Lagos Police Commissioner Amid Assembly Crisis

Amid the ongoing leadership crisis at the Lagos State House of Assembly, the Police Service Commission has appointed Olohundare Moshood Jimoh as the new Commissioner of Police for Lagos, Nigeria’s economic hub.

A statement from the Commission’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani, revealed that Jimoh was previously the Commissioner of Police for the Ports Authority at the Eastern Ports.

Jimoh, a native of Kwara State, has held various roles including Force Public Relations Officer, Deputy Commissioner of Airport Police, Deputy Commissioner of Finance and Administration, and Deputy Commissioner for General Investigation.

While the Police Commission did not provide a specific reason for the change in leadership, many believe it may be linked to the ongoing leadership struggle at the Lagos State House of Assembly.

On Monday, the Assembly’s leadership dispute took a dramatic turn, with heavy security presence during a plenary session. Security vans and officers were seen stationed around the Assembly complex in Alausa, Lagos. There was even a brief standoff when security personnel attempted to enter the chambers, delaying the session by several hours.

An official from the Assembly later confirmed that Speaker Mojisola Meranda and 32 members of the legislative body were present for the session, although the topics under discussion remained unclear. Meanwhile, some members were seen engaging in small group discussions inside the premises.

Despite rumors that Meranda might be asked to resign or face impeachment, a source close to the Assembly stated that the leadership remains intact. Some workers at the Assembly, however, were seen gathering around Meranda, expressing support for her continued role as Speaker.

In January 2025, Meranda made history when she replaced Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, following Obasa’s removal over allegations of fraud and other charges.
