The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has called MultiChoice Nigeria to account for its planned increase in subscription rates for DStv and GoTV.
Recently, customers received notifications informing them of the price hike, with the DStv Premium bouquet rising from N37,000 to N44,500, and Compact+ subscribers set to pay N30,000, up from N25,000. These new rates are set to take effect on March 1, 2025.
In response, the FCCPC has summoned MultiChoice Nigeria’s CEO to attend a hearing at the agency’s headquarters on Thursday.
FCCPC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu, stated that the commission is concerned about the proposed price increase, highlighting issues such as repeated unilateral price hikes, potential abuse of market dominance, and perceived anti-competitive behavior in the pay-TV industry.
Ijagwu also expressed concern over MultiChoice’s pricing practices in different markets, adding that the FCCPC could impose regulatory penalties or other corrective measures if the company fails to offer satisfactory explanations or is found to violate fair market practices. The commission emphasized its commitment to protecting Nigerian consumers and ensuring fair competition within the country’s broadcasting and digital subscription sectors.
