Fubara Orders New Local Government Election Following Supreme Court Verdict

Following the Supreme Court’s Friday ruling, which declared the October 5, 2024, local government election in Rivers State invalid, Governor Fubara has ordered a fresh election.

In a state broadcast on Sunday, Fubara announced that he had consulted with his legal team, who expect to receive the certified true copy of the judgment by Friday, March 7, 2025. He reiterated his commitment to upholding constitutional principles and following the law.

Meanwhile, the governor has instructed the Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGAs) to immediately take over the 23 local government councils across the state. This comes after the Supreme Court nullified the October 5, 2023, local government elections. Fubara further directed the outgoing chairmen to formally hand over their responsibilities to the HLGAs by Monday, March 3, 2025.

Amid political uncertainty, the governor urged residents to remain calm, assuring them that his administration remains committed to governance and due process.

In a related ruling, the Supreme Court barred the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Accountant General of the Federation, and other agencies from releasing funds to the Rivers State government until it complies with the court’s orders.

The court also dismissed Fubara’s cross-appeal challenging the validity of the House of Assembly under Speaker Martin Amaewhule. The justices ordered Amaewhule to resume sitting with other elected members immediately.
