Reps End Plenary With No Mention Of Rivers Emergency Rule Declaration

On Wednesday, the House of Representatives concluded plenary without addressing the state of emergency in Rivers State.

President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers on Tuesday due to the ongoing political crisis in the oil-rich South-South state.

Many had anticipated that the emergency declaration would be discussed during Wednesday’s session, but the issue was not raised before the plenary was adjourned.

However, prior to the start of the session, two female lawmakers were involved in a heated argument over the state of emergency in Rivers. Reps Blessing Amadi from Rivers State and Marie Ebikake had a loud confrontation just before plenary began.

After the incident, plenary proceeded with lawmakers agreeing to investigate the Federal Government’s Conditional Cash Transfer programme.

Honourable Abass Adigun, who presented the motion, reminded the House that in August 2024, nominees for the programme were informed that they would receive N50,000 each for three months to ensure the programme’s effective and efficient delivery.

However, some nominees received their payments months after submitting their information, while others have yet to receive anything. Furthermore, the National Cash Transfer Office has not responded regarding the outstanding payments for these nominees.
