Independence Bridge: Sanwo-Olu apologises to Lagosians over severe gridlock

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has issued an apology to Lagosians who were stranded for hours in traffic due to ongoing repair work on the Independence Bridge.

The closure of the Independence Bridge for repairs left thousands of commuters stuck in the area between Wednesday evening and early Thursday. Social media quickly shared photos and videos of the gridlock, leading to widespread criticism.

On Thursday morning, Governor Sanwo-Olu visited the site to assess the progress of the repairs. He expressed regret over the traffic chaos, acknowledging that better communication with residents about the situation should have been handled.

“First and foremost, I believe it is important to offer our sincerest apologies to all citizens and Lagosians for the extremely challenging and frustrating conditions we experienced over the past 24 hours in the city and on Lagos Island,” the governor stated, accompanied by his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, and other government officials during the inspection.

“I believe this apology is crucial so that we, as a government—both at the national and state levels—take full responsibility for putting our people through this unfortunate situation. While the intention was good, aimed at preventing a future disaster, we understand the difficulties this caused.”
