Gas cylinder explosion injures 15 including children in Lagos

A gas explosion on Sunday injured at least 15 people in Ijora Badia, a suburb of Lagos.

The explosion, which occurred around 5:00 p.m., was reportedly caused by a leaking 25-kilogram gas cylinder inside a mini shop. The shop was part of a bungalow complex that also contained 15 self-contained rooms and seven other shops.

Eyewitness Mr. Kabiru Ahmed stated that the blast caused significant damage, but fortunately, no fatalities were reported.

Initial investigations suggest that the gas leak, likely due to improper handling, was ignited by a nearby flame.

Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, confirmed the incident and stated that the fire had been completely extinguished. She also mentioned that all remaining gas cylinders had been safely removed from the scene.

Fifteen people, including both adults and children, sustained varying degrees of burn injuries. “Many received first aid on-site, while others were transported to the hospital for further treatment. Thankfully, none of the injuries are life-threatening,” Adeseye said.

She also noted that emergency response teams from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, Lagos State Ambulance Service, and the Nigeria Police were all on-site assisting with the situation.
