Shelve April 7 nationwide protest, police warn organisers

Police authorities have asked the organizers of a nationwide protest billed for April 7, 2025, to shelve the plan.

The Take-It-Back (TIB) movement had planned a nationwide protest for Monday, April 7, 2025, citing various national concerns.

However, on Sunday, Muyiwa Adejobi, the spokesman for the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), criticized the protest as poorly timed, especially since it coincides with the National Police Day celebration.

“As part of global best practices in recognizing the achievements of police institutions, the Nigerian Government has declared April 7 as National Police Day,” the police statement said.

“The decision to hold a nationwide protest on the same day raises questions and is viewed as a deliberate and unpatriotic act that could tarnish the reputation of both the Nigeria Police and the nation. The Nigeria Police Force strongly advises the organizers to cancel this protest, as it is ill-timed and provocative.”

The Nigeria Police Force urged the organizers to pursue dialogue with the government instead of staging a protest.

“The Nigeria Police Force, led by Inspector-General of Police IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, reiterates its commitment to fulfilling its duties following the law and respecting citizens’ rights. The NPF encourages the protest organizers and participants to seek engagement with the appropriate government bodies to address their concerns,” the statement concluded.
