Fubara Absent As PDP Govs Meet In Oyo

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara was noticeably absent on Monday as governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gathered in Ibadan, Oyo State, to deliberate on pressing national matters.

The meeting, presided over by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed—who also chairs the PDP Governors’ Forum—was attended by Governors Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Douye Diri (Bayelsa), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), Agbu Kefas (Taraba), and Peter Mbah (Enugu). Deputy Governors Akon Eyakenyi (Akwa Ibom) and Monday Onyeme (Delta) were also present.

Following the closed-door session, which lasted approximately six hours, the Forum issued a communique clarifying the PDP’s position on potential political alliances. Contrary to recent speculation, the party stated it has no intention of joining any coalition or merger ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Governor Mohammed, who read the communique, emphasized that while the PDP is not pursuing any coalition at this time, it remains open to welcoming individuals, parties, and groups aligned with its mission to restore effective governance and leadership in Nigeria.

“The Forum resolved that the PDP will not join any coalition or merger. However, as a major opposition party, it welcomes any party, persons, or groups willing to join it with a view to wrestling power and enthroning good leadership in 2027,” the statement noted.

In addition, the Forum expressed support for Governor Fubara amid recent political tensions, including his suspension by President Bola Tinubu and the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.

Addressing the escalating insecurity across parts of Nigeria, the governors voiced concern over the situation in Borno, Katsina, Edo, and Plateau states. They advocated for a comprehensive overhaul of the country’s security structure, urging a more localized approach that empowers state governments to play an active role in ensuring safety.

The Forum also announced a forthcoming national meeting on May 27, 2025, during which a Zoning Committee will be inaugurated in preparation for the PDP’s national convention, slated for August 28–30, 2025, in Kano.

As part of the preparations, Governor Douye Diri was appointed Chair of the Zoning Committee, while Governor Ahmadu Fintiri will lead the National Convention Committee.
