President Tinubu Mourns Victims of Plateau Killings, Urges Lasting Peace
President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the recent wave of violence in Plateau State, which has resulted in the deaths of more than 40 people.
In a statement released on Monday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President strongly condemned the attacks and extended his heartfelt condolences to Governor Caleb Mutfwang, the state government, and the people of Plateau. He also called on the governor to demonstrate the political will necessary to end the crisis and build lasting peace.
President Tinubu, in his message of unity, urged the people of Plateau to rise above ethnic and religious divisions, stressing the importance of love, mutual understanding, and solidarity in confronting the persistent conflict.
He further called on political, religious, and community leaders both within and outside the state to work together to put an end to the cycle of reprisals that have destabilized affected communities.
“The persistent violence in Plateau State, stemming from ethnic and religious tensions, must come to an end,” Tinubu said.
“I have directed security agencies to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the recent attacks and identify those behind these heinous crimes. This cycle of bloodshed and revenge must stop—enough is enough.
“While security forces tackle the perpetrators, the political leadership under Governor Caleb Mutfwang must also confront the root causes of this long-standing crisis.”
He noted that the conflict, which has plagued Plateau for more than two decades, can no longer be ignored.
“It’s time to address these foundational issues with fairness and resolve. I’ve had conversations with the governor and offered possible pathways to lasting peace,” he added.
The President reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting the Plateau State government through dialogue, promoting social harmony, and ensuring accountability as part of a long-term strategy to resolve the conflict.
Meanwhile, Channels Television reported that the death toll from Monday’s attack on Zike community in Kimakpa, Kwall district of Bassa Local Government Area, has risen to 51, with many homes destroyed.
Local leader Wakili Tongwe said the attack occurred in the early hours of Monday, with gunmen opening fire on residents who were fleeing after hearing gunshots.
