Reps Committee call upon Rivers Administrator Ibas

The committee has summoned Ibas to appear for a comprehensive interactive session scheduled for Thursday, April 17, 2025, at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.

According to a statement by House of Representatives spokesman, Akin Rotimi, the session will provide an opportunity for the committee to review initial reports and recent developments in Rivers State since the appointment of the sole administrator.

Committee Chairman and House Leader, Julius Ihonvbere, stated that the engagement is essential to determine the true situation in the state and ensure the House remains well-informed in carrying out its oversight responsibilities.

The committee also confirmed that a formal invitation was sent to the retired naval chief and has been acknowledged.

On March 18, 2025, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in oil-rich Rivers State, suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all members of the State House of Assembly for six months. He appointed Ibas as sole administrator for the period.

The President invoked Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution, which permits the suspension of regular constitutional procedures in times of national danger, disaster, or crisis.

The National Assembly ratified the emergency rule within 48 hours, despite significant opposition from various public figures and organizations, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, Atedo Peterside, Nasir El-Rufai, Femi Falana, as well as the Labour Party (LP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nigerian Bar Association, and PANDEF.

This marks the first time since May 14, 2013, when former President Goodluck Jonathan declared emergency rule in Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa, that such action has been taken.
