Hyacinth Alia, the Governor of Benue State, has appealed to the federal government to urgently address the worsening insecurity in the state.
The governor issued a strong appeal on Saturday during a visit to the sites of recent violent attacks in the state, as the death toll in Ukum and Logo Local Government Areas rose to 56 following assaults by suspected armed militia.
The attacks, which took place in the Sankera axis of Benue State, have resulted in dozens of deaths and the displacement of several communities.
While addressing residents during the visit, Governor Hyacinth Alia condemned the violence, describing the incidents as brutal assaults on innocent civilians. He urged security agencies to take more decisive action to end the bloodshed.
The governor also held meetings with traditional leaders and members of the affected communities, reaffirming the government’s commitment to restoring peace and addressing insecurity in all its forms.
He called on the people to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands, emphasizing the importance of lawful and coordinated responses to the crisis.
In reaction to the situation, there has been an increased security presence in the affected areas. Additionally, emergency relief efforts are underway, with humanitarian aid being distributed to displaced residents across Ukum and Logo LGAs.
These latest attacks are part of a recurring wave of violence in Benue State, often attributed to suspected herdsmen, with the region continuing to bear the brunt of Nigeria’s persistent armed conflicts.
