Pope Francis passed away from a stroke that led to a coma and ultimately resulted in irreversible heart failure, according to his official death certificate released by the Vatican on Monday.
The 88-year-old head of the Catholic Church died on Monday morning, nearly a month after being discharged from a five-week hospital stay where he was treated for double pneumonia.
The Vatican stated that the stroke triggered a coma and subsequent irreversible cardiocirculatory failure, which were identified as the causes of death.
Dr. Andrea Arcangeli, Director of the Directorate of Health and Hygiene of Vatican City State, issued the death certificate, and the Holy See Press Office made the report public on Monday evening.
The medical report revealed that Pope Francis had a medical history including acute respiratory failure from multimicrobial bilateral pneumonia, multiple bronchiectases, high blood pressure, and Type II diabetes.
His death was officially confirmed through electrocardiographic thanatography. Dr. Arcangeli concluded, “I hereby declare that the causes of death, to the best of my knowledge and judgment, are as stated above.”
