FG Revives 991 Primary Healthcare Centres Nationwide — NPHCDA
The federal government has announced the revitalization of 991 primary healthcare centers (PHCs) across the country as part of its ongoing efforts to improve access to quality healthcare.
This was revealed by the Executive Director of the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr. Muyi Aina, during a quarterly press briefing held to mark the commencement of World Vaccination Week, and to provide an update on the agency’s recent progress.
In addition to the already revived centres, Dr. Aina disclosed that 2,701 PHCs are currently undergoing renovation across various states.
Highlighting key milestones over the past year, he noted that the agency is making significant strides by leveraging technology to enhance healthcare delivery, including the digitisation of healthcare services.
He introduced a new “Life Dashboard”, designed to monitor and evaluate the performance of primary healthcare centres in wards across the country.
Dr Aina also revealed that over 120,000 healthcare workers have undergone retraining and that emergency healthcare services have been strengthened through the provision of ambulances nationwide.
In the area of maternal and neonatal health, he announced the rollout of an initiative to reduce maternal mortality, currently being implemented in 172 local government areas across five states.
On immunisation efforts, the Executive Director shared that vaccination rates have improved by 54%, with seven states recording significant scale-ups. To date, 26 million children have been vaccinated.
He also reported that 101,158 children in four states have received vaccinations against malaria.
Looking ahead, Dr Aina stated that a new polio vaccination campaign will commence on May 3 in select northern states as part of a coordinated effort with the Lake Chad countries to vaccinate 83 million children against the disease.
