Gunmen Kill at Least 20 in Indian-Administered Kashmir – Police Report

Official Statement on the Attack in Indian-Administered Kashmir

We strongly condemn the horrific attack carried out by armed assailants on a group of tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir, near the Baisaran meadow, approximately five kilometers from the resort town of Pahalgam. According to Indian police reports, the attack has resulted in the tragic loss of at least 20 lives, with many others injured—some critically.

This heinous act of violence marks one of the deadliest assaults on civilians in the region in recent years. The perpetrators opened fire at close range, targeting innocent tourists, the majority of whom are believed to be Indian nationals. As of now, no group has claimed responsibility, though law enforcement agencies have attributed the attack to armed militants opposed to Indian rule.

The Government of India has launched a full-scale investigation and manhunt to bring those responsible to justice. Emergency services responded swiftly, transporting the injured to medical facilities for urgent care.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, currently on an official visit to Saudi Arabia, has denounced the attack as a cowardly and brutal act, pledging that the culprits will face the full force of the law. Minister of Home Affairs, Amit Shah, is en route to Srinagar to personally assess the situation and ensure a robust security response.

We also acknowledge the international expressions of solidarity, including a statement from U.S. President Donald Trump, who reaffirmed support for India in the global fight against terrorism.

We join in mourning the victims of this tragedy and extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. Acts of terror against civilians—especially visitors who come in peace—have no place in our society and will not be tolerated.

The government remains committed to ensuring the safety of all residents and visitors in Kashmir. Security in the region has been intensified, and further measures are being taken to prevent such attacks in the future.
