Lagos State Set to Begin Construction of 68km Green Line Rail by Year-End
The Lagos State Government has announced plans to commence construction of the 68-kilometre Green Line Rail project, stretching from Marina to the Lekki Free Trade Zone, before the end of 2025.
This announcement was made by the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, during the 2025 ministerial briefing held at Alausa, Ikeja.
Osiyemi noted that residents commuting along the Marina–Lekki Free Zone corridor should anticipate some traffic disruptions once construction begins. He appealed to the public for patience and cooperation throughout the duration of the project.
He also highlighted that the first phase of the Blue Line Rail has successfully transported over 2 million passengers to date. To further boost operations, the state will receive three additional rolling stocks for the Blue Line by May.
Meanwhile, Phase II of the Blue Line Rail, extending from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko, is expected to be completed by December 2025.
On water transportation, Osiyemi shared that the Lagos State Ferry Services (LAGFERRY) transported 280,282 passengers between May 2024 and 2025, with daily ridership growing from 1,200 in 2024 to 1,500 currently.
In a significant achievement, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) earned the prestigious ISO 9001:2015 certification, recognizing its commitment to quality management and passenger safety across the state’s waterways.
He further disclosed that the upgrade of 49 traffic junctions has been completed, while work on six others is ongoing. Additionally, 50 electric buses have been deployed along the Lagos–Badagry Expressway corridor to promote sustainable transit.
As part of the administration’s inclusive initiatives, Osiyemi revealed that people living with disabilities now have access to special number plates for identification and data collection purposes.
He clarified that the recently introduced speed limits on selected routes are not revenue-driven but are intended to enhance public safety and facilitate accurate data tracking.
