Pedestrian Killed by Lorry on Ojota Expressway as LASTMA Urges Use of Pedestrian Bridges
A tragic road accident on the Ojota Expressway in Lagos claimed the life of an unidentified pedestrian over the weekend. According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the victim was attempting to cross the busy highway illegally, bypassing the designated pedestrian bridge, when he was struck and killed by a lorry.
In an official statement released on Sunday, LASTMA confirmed that the lorry driver, in an attempt to flee the scene of the fatal collision, lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a Toyota Corolla with registration number LND 905 HN.
LASTMA officers quickly intervened, apprehending the fleeing driver and securing the vehicle. Both have since been handed over to the Ogudu Police Division for further investigation.
The remains of the deceased were transferred to the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU), in accordance with standard protocol.
Speaking on the incident, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki described the death as “tragic and wholly preventable,” while extending condolences to the victim’s family. He stressed the dangers of crossing expressways on foot and urged pedestrians to make use of the state’s many pedestrian bridges.
“It is both reckless and unlawful to ignore the infrastructural provisions made for pedestrian safety,” Bakare-Oki said. “The Lagos State Government has invested significantly in pedestrian bridges, and it is incumbent upon all road users to utilise them conscientiously.”
LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, reiterated the agency’s commitment to road safety, emphasizing that disregard for traffic laws not only puts individuals at risk but endangers the broader public.
The agency concluded by calling on all road users to comply with traffic safety protocols and prioritize the preservation of human life.
