Babcock University Denounces Parents’ Missing Student Claims, Considers Legal Action
Babcock University, located in Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, has reacted strongly to allegations made by a parent, Mrs Fijabi Omotayo, regarding the disappearance of her son, Oladipupo Siwajuola, on campus. The institution described the claims, widely circulated on social media, as “sensational and misleading”, asserting that they have unfairly damaged its reputation.
In a statement issued by the Director of Communication and Public Relations, Dr. Joshua Suleiman, the university stated that Siwajuola, a student of the Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB) programme, left campus without following required exit protocols. The school confirmed it is considering a defamation lawsuit against Mrs. Fijabi for her online comments, which it says misrepresented the university and its students.
The university added that the student was later reportedly found in Akute, Ifo LGA, near Lagos, where he had previously attended secondary school. It also noted concerns raised by his roommates about his unusual behavior and possession of herbal items considered suspicious under campus rules. Mrs. Fijabi reportedly claimed the items were meant for treating skin conditions.
According to the school, the mother had asked her son’s roommates not to report his absence, which the university believes was an attempt to conceal misconduct. Evidence from WhatsApp messages was cited as supporting this claim. The school has since referred the matter to the police and stated that Siwajuola, along with anyone involved, would appear before the Student Disciplinary Committee.
The institution emphasized its right to take legal action in response to reputational harm. It urged parents to work with the university through appropriate channels rather than turning to public accusations.
Mrs. Fijabi had taken to Facebook in an emotional plea, saying she had not heard from her son since April 27. She later confirmed that he had been found but did not provide details on his recovery.
