EFCC Confirms Arrest of Social Media Influencer VeryDarkMan, Cites Serious Financial Allegations
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has officially confirmed the arrest of popular rights activist and social media influencer Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), following multiple petitions involving serious financial misconduct.
In a statement released Tuesday via its official X (formerly Twitter) account, the anti-corruption agency stated that Otse was apprehended after repeatedly ignoring several summons sent to his known addresses and communication channels.
“Martins Vincent Otse was invited by the EFCC based on multiple petitions alleging various forms of financial crimes. Despite numerous attempts to reach him through appropriate channels, he failed to honour those invitations,” the statement read.
The EFCC emphasized that the allegations against Otse were significant and could not be overlooked. While acknowledging that the influencer had previously made disparaging remarks about the Commission, the agency clarified that his arrest was solely in response to the petitions and not as retaliation.
The agency also addressed public backlash over Otse’s detention, affirming that it acted within the bounds of the law. It said a valid remand order was obtained and that Otse had since been granted administrative bail, pending fulfillment of the conditions.
“EFCC, like any law enforcement agency, has the legal authority to detain individuals under investigation, provided due process is followed. Otse’s arrest and detention are lawful, and he will be released once bail requirements are met,” the agency added.
It also reassured the public that formal charges would be filed once the ongoing investigation concludes. The Commission urged Nigerians to allow it to carry out its duties without interference or unfounded speculation.
Meanwhile, Otse’s arrest has sparked street protests and condemnation from various public figures. On Monday, dozens of youths marched through Abuja, carrying placards that demanded his release and questioned the motives behind his arrest.
Prominent political figures, including former Vice President and 2023 PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, criticized the EFCC’s actions, describing them as an abuse of power. Atiku claimed the incident reflected a broader trend of political repression under the current administration.
Similarly, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi condemned the arrest, likening it to an abduction, and expressed concern over the potentially dangerous precedent it sets.
Nigerian music superstar Davido also lent his voice to the growing chorus of support for Otse, saying, “FREE MY GUY,” while praising the groundswell of public solidarity as a sign that good deeds still resonate with the people.
Otse was reportedly arrested on May 2 following the EFCC’s receipt of several petitions. As of now, the case remains under investigation.
