Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has vowed to end the club’s five-year trophy drought next season, following a 1-0 victory over Newcastle that secured Champions League qualification. Declan Rice’s stunning second-half goal ended Arsenal’s five-game winless run and ensured a top-five finish in the Premier League.
Despite the win, there is a sense of underachievement at the Emirates, with Arsenal likely to finish runners-up for the third straight season. The Gunners failed to mount a serious title challenge, as Liverpool cruised to the Premier League crown. Arsenal also fell short in both the Champions League and League Cup semi-finals.
Arteta’s only trophy since taking over remains the 2020 FA Cup, while Arsenal’s league title drought now stretches to 21 years. Addressing fans after the match, Arteta acknowledged the disappointment but promised a renewed push next season.
“We had a dream to bring the big trophies home, but it didn’t happen—due to many circumstances,” he said. “We must not let the dream get blurry. With hunger, talent, and unity, we will make it happen.”
Captain Martin Ødegaard echoed Arteta’s sentiments. “There’s pride in how far we came, especially in Europe, but we weren’t good enough in the league,” he said. “We’ll use both the highs and the pain to come back stronger and win trophies.”
Newcastle’s Top-Four Hopes Hang in Balance
Newcastle controlled the first half but were wasteful in front of goal, missing top scorer Alexander Isak, who was sidelined with a groin issue. Manager Eddie Howe confirmed Isak underwent a precautionary scan and remains a doubt for their final match against Everton on May 25.
Despite the loss, Newcastle remain third and are level on points with Chelsea and Aston Villa, holding an advantage on goal difference. Howe stressed the importance of staying focused.
“We’re still in a good position. It all comes down to one last push,” he said. “There’s so much at stake, and everyone’s giving it their all. Now we just need to finish the job.”
