East-West road ready by December, Eleme road to open in 10 days – FG

The Federal Government has assured Nigerians that Section 3 of the East-West Road, which stretches 15 kilometers from Eleme Junction to Onne Junction in Rivers State, will be completed and opened to the public by December 2025.

Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has assured Nigerians that the long-delayed Eleme section of the East-West Road in Rivers State will be open for public use within the next 10 days.

Umahi gave the update during an inspection tour of the project site, emphasizing the road’s strategic economic importance, particularly in connecting vital oil and gas infrastructure in the Onne area.

Accompanied by the Rivers State Controller of Works, Tarilade Enwereama, the Minister engaged with Reynolds Construction Company (RCC), the contractors handling the project. Enwereama commended the quality of work, stating that the reconstructed section is expected to last between 50 and 100 years.

“This road is being built to the highest engineering standards and is designed to serve Nigerians for decades,” he said.

Umahi reaffirmed that Section 3 of the road—including planned flyovers—will be completed on schedule, with the entire stretch to Onne set for delivery by December. He put the total project cost at ₦156 billion and reiterated the Tinubu administration’s commitment to delivering high-impact infrastructure nationwide.

Calling the road a “national economic asset,” Umahi stressed the government’s determination to see the project through.

This visit marks his ninth trip to the site since construction resumed, underscoring a renewed federal focus on infrastructure development in the South-South region.

Meanwhile, residents and commuters along the corridor have expressed cautious optimism, hoping that the December deadline will finally ease years of traffic congestion and economic disruption on the critical route.
