Saraki’s panel meets Mbah after Southeast threat to quit PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Special Reconciliation Committee, led by former Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki, held a meeting on Friday with Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State.

Governor Mbah, who serves as the party’s leader in the South-East zone, hosted the meeting at the Enugu State Government House. The closed-door session was part of ongoing efforts to address the wave of defections affecting the party.

Committee members present at the meeting included former Bayelsa State Governor Senator Seriake Dickson and former Gombe State Governor Dr. Ibrahim Dankwambo.

Earlier, leaders of the PDP in the South-East, in a communique issued after their Zonal Executive Council meeting two weeks ago, reaffirmed the nomination of former PDP National Youth Leader, Sunday Udeh-Okoye, to complete the remaining tenure of the National Secretary position. They warned that failure to honor this decision could lead to a mass exit from the party.

“If our position is not promptly implemented by the party, the South-East PDP, as a family, will be compelled to reconsider our relationship with the PDP going forward,” the communique read.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting with Governor Peter Mbah, the Chairman of the PDP Special Reconciliation Committee, Dr. Bukola Saraki, highlighted the significance of the South-East to the party’s future.

“This is the first state we are visiting because we recognize the vital role the South-East has consistently played as the backbone of the PDP’s popularity and strength,” Saraki said.

He explained that the committee’s visit was both to consult with Governor Mbah and to commend him for his leadership within the party, as well as for the progress being made in Enugu State, which he described as a model of PDP governance in action.

Saraki further noted that discussions centered on ensuring the successful execution of the committee’s mandate, including preparations for the party’s upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting and convention. He emphasized the goal of conducting a smooth, peaceful, and unified process that would strengthen the PDP moving forward.

“We’ve had very useful and constructive discussions,” he said. “We are leaving with valuable suggestions that we intend to act on.”

He concluded by expressing optimism about the party’s prospects, stating, “What we have seen today in Enugu lays the groundwork for a stronger, renewed PDP. The challenges ahead are not insurmountable, and the unity and dedication of our leaders are truly encouraging.”
