In a gesture of solidarity and compassion, a high-level delegation from Ogun State, led by Deputy Governor Noimot Salako-Oyedele, visited Kano on Monday to commiserate with the state government and families of the 22 athletes who tragically lost their lives in a road accident.
Speaking during the visit, Salako-Oyedele conveyed the condolences of Governor Dapo Abiodun, who is currently on Hajj, and announced a donation of ₦1 million to each bereaved family as an initial support package.
“This is a heartbreaking loss for Kano State and the entire sporting community. We are here to offer our support and prayers and to stand in solidarity during this difficult time,” she said, praying for divine mercy on the departed souls.
The delegation included key Ogun State officials such as the Secretary to the State Government, Tokunbo Talabi; Commissioner for Sports Development, Wasiu Isiaka; and Executive Secretary of the Gateway Games LOC, Kweku Tandoh, alongside other officials and athletes.
They were received at the Kano Government House by Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo, who expressed gratitude for the visit and support, acknowledging Governor Abiodun’s earlier condolence call.
“This visit reaffirms Ogun State’s concern and compassion. We appreciate the show of solidarity,” Gwarzo stated.
The tragic accident occurred on Saturday around 12:30 p.m. at Gadar Yankifi in Garun Malam LGA. The crash involved a Toyota Coaster bus (registration KN041 A17) carrying 32 people—31 men and one woman. According to the Federal Road Safety Corps, 22 died at the scene, while others sustained injuries.
