The Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs in Niger State, Ahmad Suleiman, has revealed that more than 200 bodies have been recovered following the recent devastating floods in Mokwa Local Government Area.
Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Tuesday, Suleiman said recovery efforts are ongoing, with many victims still unaccounted for.
“We have more than 200 casualties or corpses, but we are still looking for more,” she stated. “Nobody can give an exact figure yet because the search is still ongoing.”
She added that the Umar Bago-led administration has activated an emergency response, deploying aid and relief materials to displaced persons currently sheltered in makeshift camps.
“Trailers of rice have been dispatched. The governor’s wife also visited the area yesterday and donated ₦50 million to support the victims,” she said.
Despite these efforts, many victims have expressed dissatisfaction over poor living conditions and insufficient aid at the camps.
A resident, Mama Isah, lamented, “We are 17 in my household, but we were only given one loaf of bread and some tea — that’s not enough.”
Community volunteers have also raised concerns about the state of the camps, describing them as unsuitable for habitation.
