The Take-It-Back Movement, led by activist Omoyele Sowore, has reaffirmed plans to stage a national protest on June 12, rejecting what it describes as the “hollow ceremonies and official pageantry” associated with Democracy Day.
In a statement signed by National Coordinator Juwon Sanyaolu, the group declared June 12 a “national day of resistance,” urging Nigerians to rise against what it called escalating tyranny and bad governance.
“This is not a democracy. This is organised cruelty,” the group said, citing the rise in mass killings, suppression of free speech, and increasing use of the Cybercrime Act to stifle dissent.
The statement condemned the growing wave of violence in regions like Benue, Plateau, and Southern Kaduna, accusing the state of complicity through “inaction, negligence, or outright denial.”
“While the powerful celebrate, the people continue to suffer,” the group added, vowing to march in memory of victims of injustice, repression, and insecurity across the country.
