UEFA has revised its penalty kick rules following the controversial disqualification of a goal by Atlético Madrid’s Julián Álvarez during a Champions League shootout against Real Madrid in March.
Previously, a penalty goal was disallowed if the taker accidentally made contact with the ball using both feet—a “double touch.” Under the new rule, such an unintentional double contact will no longer invalidate the goal; instead, the penalty will be retaken.
The change comes in response to criticism over the incident, which contributed to Atlético’s elimination and led the club to file a formal protest with UEFA.
