The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has dismissed viral social media claims that the English Language paper, written on May 28 during the ongoing 2025 WASSCE for School Candidates, has been cancelled.
In an official statement on Tuesday, WAEC described the purported cancellation notice, which circulated online with a May 30 date, as entirely false and the work of “mischief-makers.” The council stressed that the exam was conducted as scheduled and remains valid.
“The management of WAEC wishes to state that the press release being circulated did not originate from the council. The said examination has not been cancelled,” said Moyosola Adesina, Acting Head of Public Affairs.
WAEC reiterated that all official communications are disseminated only through verified social media channels and accredited media outlets. The council urged candidates, parents, and schools to disregard unverified information and rely solely on official announcements.
The false cancellation notice likely gained traction due to widespread reports of delays and logistical issues during the administration of the English paper, which some candidates sat late into the night. However, WAEC attributed the delays to intensified efforts to prevent examination malpractice, particularly question paper leaks.
Reports have also linked some WAEC officials to the premature circulation of the English Language paper, allegedly leaked four days before the exam.
Despite these concerns, WAEC reaffirmed its commitment to upholding examination integrity and delivering quality service, thanking stakeholders for their continued trust over the past 73 years.
