FG to Crack Down on Illegal Satellite Campuses, Unapproved University Centres

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has issued a stern warning to federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education, stating that any satellite campus established without prior approval from their respective regulatory bodies — the NUC, NBTE, and NCCE — will face strict sanctions.

In a memo dated May 30, 2025, addressed to the heads of the regulatory agencies and obtained by PUNCH Online, the minister expressed concern over the increasing number of unauthorised satellite campuses. He noted that many of these campuses lack the academic, strategic, and infrastructural support necessary for quality education.

Alausa criticised institutions for diverting scarce resources to these inadequately equipped campuses instead of improving existing ones, warning that such actions undermine the integrity and sustainability of the tertiary education system.

He directed the NUC, NBTE, and NCCE to inform all federal tertiary institutions that no satellite campus should be created without express ministerial approval, adding that non-compliance will attract disciplinary action.
