On June 3, 2025, President Bola Tinubu awarded Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) during a ceremony in Lagos. The honour recognises Gates’ long-standing contributions to global health and development, particularly in Nigeria.
Gates is in the country to meet with federal and state leaders about strengthening Nigeria’s primary healthcare system. His visit includes participation in a “Goalkeepers Nigeria” event on Africa’s innovation future and discussions with local scientists on AI and health.
Business magnate Aliko Dangote also attended the event. Gates’ visit underscores the Gates Foundation’s deepening commitment to Africa, following its \$200 billion pledge to global health and development over the next 20 years.
