Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Governor Umo Eno announced his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) during a press conference held on Friday in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.
“After completing my consultations as your servant, I have decided to progressively move to the All Progressives Congress (APC),” the governor stated.
He emphasized that his decision was not driven by weakness, but by a position of strength.
“We are not joining the APC from a position of weakness; we are joining from a position of strength,” he said.
Governor Eno explained that his move was motivated by a desire to fully support President Bola Tinubu’s economic reform agenda.
His defection comes approximately six weeks after Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori also left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the APC.
Speculation around Eno’s defection began in April when he publicly endorsed President Tinubu’s re-election bid during the launch of a 65-kilometre, three-lane dual carriageway project in Nsit-Antai Local Government Area.
Just two weeks ago, the governor reportedly instructed his commissioners and appointees to either join him in the APC or resign from their positions.
Umo Eno was elected governor of Akwa Ibom State in March 2023 and officially sworn in on May 29 of the same year.
