The Nigeria Boxing Board of Control has confirmed that the remains of Nigerian boxer Oluwasegun “Success” Olanrewaju will arrive in Nigeria next Tuesday, June 17, ending nearly three months of diplomatic and legal processes following his tragic death in Ghana
In a letter dated June 10 and addressed to the President of the Ghana Boxing Authority, the President of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBofC), Dr. Rafiu Ladipo, confirmed that all arrangements for the repatriation of the late boxer have been finalised. This followed discussions between Dr. Ladipo, the NBBofC General Secretary, Hon. Remi Aboderin, and Ghanaian boxing officials.
“Following your call and my discussion with you, along with the General Secretary, Hon. Remi Aboderin, we have informed the family of the late boxer and agreed to receive his remains on Tuesday, June 17, 2025,” the letter stated.
The NBBofC explained that this timing would enable the family to make necessary preparations, noting that the body would be taken directly for burial upon arrival, with no need for mortuary services.
The Nigerian boxing authorities also requested that Ghana provide the late boxer’s fight purse and appropriate compensation for the tragic incident. They emphasized that the remains should be transported in a casket rather than a body bag.
“We would appreciate it if you could bring along his fight purse, as well as compensation for this unfortunate loss,” the letter added.
“Please ensure the body is transported in a casket, not just a body bag.”
