273,000 Syrian refugees return home from Turkey

More than 273,000 Syrians who had fled to Turkey during their country’s civil war have returned home since the fall of President Bashar al-Assad in December, Turkey’s Vice President announced on Friday.

“The number of voluntary returns to Syria since December 8, 2024, has surpassed 273,000,” said Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz, as reported by the state-run Anadolu news agency.

Despite these returns, approximately 2.7 million Syrian refugees remain in Turkey, according to data released by the Interior Ministry in May.

The Turkish government, which backs Syria’s new leadership, is seeking to speed up the repatriation process in an effort to reduce domestic tensions linked to the continued presence of refugees in various regions of the country.
