Benue APC condemns alleged suppression of peaceful protesters by Gov Alia

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benue State has condemned what it described as the “barbaric” suppression of peaceful protesters allegedly by the administration of Governor Hyacinth Alia, following fresh killings in the state.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Daniel Ihomun, the Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benue State, condemned reports that peaceful protesters, gathered in mourning and solidarity, were allegedly shot at and dispersed on the orders of the state government.

Governor Hyacinth Alia, a member of the APC, was elected under the party’s platform in the 2023 gubernatorial election.

“The APC Benue State Chapter, led by Austin Agada, stands in solidarity with the courageous people of Benue who, in the face of ongoing violence and government inaction, chose to protest peacefully—only to be met with what appears to be state-backed violence,” Ihomun said.

Referring to the alleged use of force on the protesters as “a new low in governance,” Ihomun criticized the state government for turning against the very citizens it was elected to protect.

“What more evidence is needed to show that the Alia administration has not only failed in its basic responsibility to safeguard lives and property, but is now actively contributing to the pain and suppression of its own people?” the statement asked.
