PDP writes INEC as party holds NEC meeting June 30

The Peoples Democratic Party has formally informed the Independent National Electoral Commission of its plan to convene National Executive Committee meeting on June 30.

In a letter dated May 30 and addressed to the INEC Chairman, the acting National Chairman of the PDP, Umar Damagum, informed the commission that the 100th NEC meeting would hold on June 30 at the National Secretariat of the party in Abuja.

The notification is in line with INEC regulations requiring a 21-day notice before any NEC meeting to decide on issues like National Secretary and others.

A senior member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who spoke on condition of anonymity due to not being authorised to comment publicly, revealed that the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting is scheduled for June 30 to tackle unresolved internal issues.

According to the source, the meeting will focus on addressing the ongoing dispute over the office of the National Secretary, approving outcomes from the party’s zonal congresses, and reviewing reports and recommendations from various internal committees.

The PDP has been dealing with persistent internal crises both before and after the 2023 general elections. These include the conflict in Rivers State, unresolved issues surrounding the South-South and South-East zonal congresses, the controversy over the National Secretary position, and, more recently, disputes relating to the North-Central zonal congress.

These tensions have escalated among party leaders and spread across different states and regions, further deepening internal divisions. As a result, the NEC meeting has been postponed six times, delaying critical decisions about the party’s strategic direction.

This prolonged instability has contributed to the defection of prominent party figures such as Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno, who have joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In an effort to resolve the controversy over the National Secretary role, the PDP’s National Caucus Fact-Finding Committee, led by Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas, confirmed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially recognises Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s National Secretary. The committee presented its findings to the PDP National Caucus on May 27 in Abuja.

However, the matter was not discussed during the 99th NEC meeting held on the same day. Instead, the meeting agreed to reconvene on June 30 to deliberate on the unresolved issues.
