President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday ordered security chiefs to apprehend those responsible for last Friday’s deadly attack in Yelewata community, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.
Addressing the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, during a town hall meeting with political leaders in Benue, Tinubu said:
“Christopher… We need to be vigilant. Let’s go after these criminals and bring them to justice.”
The President is visiting Benue, a state currently reeling from a surge in violent attacks by armed herders that have claimed at least 100 lives.
In a pointed remark to Governor Hyacinth Alia, Tinubu added:
“Your political enemies don’t want you to succeed… Are you just realizing that?”
Calling for collective action, Tinubu urged leaders across the region to collaborate in restoring peace:
“We cannot do without one another. I propose we immediately form a leadership committee to convene in Abuja and develop a strategy for lasting peace. I am prepared to invest in that peace.”
Earlier in the day, Tinubu visited victims of the attack who are receiving treatment at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital.
He was received by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, along with Governor Alia.
The attack in Yelewata left over 100 people dead, marking one of the most severe episodes of violence in the region in recent times.
