Atiku, El-Rufai coalition seeks INEC registration for new party

The National Opposition Coalition Group, led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has formally applied to the Independent National Electoral Commission for the registration of a new political party—the All Democratic Alliance.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday acknowledged receipt of an application dated June 19, confirming the opposition coalition’s intent to establish a new political platform, rather than aligning with any existing party.

The proposed party, named the African Democratic Alliance (ADA), is reportedly supported by several political heavyweights, including former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi and Umar Ardo, convener of the League of Northern Democrats and a former aide to President Olusegun Obasanjo. The initiative appears aimed at harnessing growing public dissatisfaction and recent political shifts to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the next general election.

The move comes shortly after INEC cautioned political groups that no amount of public pressure or sentiment would override the need to follow strict constitutional and electoral procedures. The commission emphasized that party registration is a rigorous legal process, not just a political announcement.

With Thursday’s formal application, the national opposition coalition has ended weeks of speculation over whether it would revive an existing dormant platform or pursue an entirely new party registration.

A copy of the application letter, obtained by our correspondent in Abuja, was signed by the ADA’s Protem National Chairman, Chief Akin A. Rickets, and Protem National Secretary, Abdullahi Elayo.
