The Senate has appointed Senator Aniekan Bassey, representing Akwa Ibom North-East, as the new Chairman of the Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations. Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the leadership change during Thursday’s plenary.
Bassey takes over from Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who remains suspended and has yet to resume legislative duties despite a court ruling in May by Justice Binta Nyako calling for her reinstatement and an apology to the Senate.
Akpoti-Uduaghan was reassigned to the committee in February after being removed as Chair of the Senate Committee on Local Content. While no official reason was given for the new appointment, it is thought to relate to her unresolved suspension.
