Liverpool set to honour Diogo Jota in pre-season clash at Preston

Liverpool have announced a series of heartfelt tributes to honour the late Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva, as the team returns to action this Sunday in a pre-season friendly against Preston North End.

Jota and Silva tragically lost their lives in a car accident in northern Spain on July 3. The vehicle, a Lamborghini, veered off the road and caught fire. Just 11 days earlier, Jota had married his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso.

In the wake of the tragedy, Liverpool postponed the start of pre-season training until Tuesday. However, the fixture at Preston will proceed as planned and marks the club’s first game since the incident.

As part of the tributes:

A rendition of Liverpool’s iconic anthem “You’ll Never Walk Alone” will be played ahead of the 14:00 GMT kick-off.

Preston North End will lay a wreath in front of the away section.

A minute of silence will be observed.

Players from both teams will wear black armbands.

Digital tributes will be displayed on the stadium’s big screen and pitchside LED boards.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot, along with several first-team players led by captain Virgil van Dijk, attended Jota’s funeral last Saturday, showing unity and support for the player’s family during a time of profound loss.

This emotional fixture will serve as both a moment of remembrance and the beginning of Liverpool’s 2025 pre-season campaign.
