Former Super Eagles defender and 1980 AFCON champion, Kadiri Ikhana, is in critical condition and receiving emergency care at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital in Auchi, Edo State. The 68-year-old legend, affectionately known as “Kawawa,” was rushed there for urgent blood transfusion and intensive medical treatment after his condition worsened.
Ikhana, a key figure in Nigeria’s 1980 AFCON victory, is being supported by Austin Braimoh, ex-Chairman of the South-South Police Service Commission, who has been covering his medical expenses.
The football icon had a remarkable career as both a player and coach, famously leading Enyimba to a CAF Champions League title and earning a national honour (MON). His illness reignites concern over the poor welfare of Nigeria’s retired athletes, as tributes and calls for support pour in from across the football community.
